Cat-Friendly Indoor Plants: Gardening Tips for a Safe Pet Home

With 13 determined and curious cats, maintaining indoor plants has been a challenging journey. Over time, I’ve discovered practical strategies and cat-friendly plant choices to create a balance between greenery and happy feline companions.

1. Before You Buy: Evaluate Your Home Setup

Creating a cat-friendly home starts with choosing the right plants and assessing your space. For low-light areas, consider using LED grow lights to help your cat-safe plants thrive.

Light Conditions

Assess your apartment’s natural light. My northeast-southwest facing home offers limited light for plants, which influences my choices.

Accessibility

Consider whether your cats can reach the chosen location. Remember, adventurous cats might even reach the ceiling if motivated!

2. Recommended Cat-Safe Plants

If you’re searching for the best pet-safe plants, options like:

African Violet
Widow’s-thrill
Peperomia
Prickly Cacti (though some cats still find them interesting!)
Echeveria elegans
Thyme
Sedum ‘Lemon Ball’
Lavender

These plants are either unappealing to cats or safe for them if they decide to nibble.

3. Cat Grass: A Fun and Safe Distraction

Cat grass is not only a treat for your pets but also a great way to distract them from your houseplants. By growing it at home, you ensure your cats stay occupied while leaving your indoor plants untouched. While it requires some effort, it can be a great addition.

Why It Works?

Cats love chewing on it, and it’s completely safe.

How to Maintain It?

Rotate pots to ensure a fresh supply. If you have multiple cats, grow several pots simultaneously.

Benefits of Cat Grass for Your Feline Friends

Cat grass is not only a safe option for your furry friends but also provides entertainment and enrichment. Cats enjoy nibbling on the grass, which can support their digestion and satisfy their natural instincts.

4. Creative Ways to Protect Your Plants

Protecting plants from cats involves strategic placement and innovative solutions.

Heavy Floor Pots with Protection

Use sturdy terracotta pots surrounded by wire or thorny barriers to discourage digging or chewing.

Wall-Mounted Planters

Install high planters on walls, ensuring cats can’t jump onto them.

Display Cabinets

IKEA’s Baggebo cabinet is perfect for showcasing plants while keeping them cat-proof.

Secured Flat Surfaces

Anchor pots to shelves with wire or adhesives to prevent them from being knocked over.

5. Deterring Cats From Plants

Natural deterrents like citrus scents and pine might work for some cats, but I’ve found commercial sprays to be more effective for cat-proofing your indoor garden.

Natural Scents

Citrus peels or pine may work for some cats.

Commercial Sprays

Some sprays designed to deter cats have been effective in my experience.

Provide Alternatives

When cats have their own plants like cat grass, they’re less interested in your other greenery.

6. Long-Term Plans for a Cat-Friendly Plant Space

I’m currently designing a cat-free area with plenty of light for my plants. In the future, I plan to create a dedicated space for low-light cat-safe plants, combined with LED lights to ensure optimal growth. This future setup will combine a workspace with a secure display for greenery, and I can’t wait to share updates when it’s ready!

Creating a pet-friendly indoor garden takes effort and creativity, but it’s worth it for the joy of greenery and the company of cats. With safe plant choices, clever placements, and distractions like cat grass, you can achieve harmony. Always consult resources like the ASPCA’s plant list for guidance.

Additional Tip for Plant Care

Always choose a number of plants that matches your ability to care for them, considering your time and organizational limits. This ensures they receive enough attention to thrive and grow beautifully.
