Moving with Cats: A Guide to a Stress-Free Transition
Moving to a new home can be stressful—not just for you, but especially for your cats. Imagine relocating 13 semi-feral cats from one familiar territory to another. It was overwhelming for me, but I learned invaluable lessons along the way.
Whether you have one or two indoor cats or a larger group accustomed to outdoor life, these tips will help ensure a smooth transition.
Preparing for the Move: Plan for Minimal Stress
Cats are territorial animals, and relocating them requires careful planning to minimize stress. Here’s how I managed:
Transporting Cats Safely:
With 12 cats, transporting them in one trip was impossible. Instead, I used three carriers and made multiple trips to ensure each cat had enough space and comfort.
Timing is Key:
Choose a time when the weather is mild to reduce stress. If your cats are outdoor cats, find them and secure them indoors well before the move to avoid last-minute scrambling.
What to Prepare in the New Home
To help your cats feel safe and comfortable in their new environment, prepare these essentials before they arrive:
Pheromones and Familiar Scents
Spray pheromone diffusers like Feliway or catnip sprays around the house.
Apply these sprays to their bedding, carriers, and scratching posts to create a calming atmosphere.
Furniture and Hiding Spots
Include their favorite climbing structures, cozy beds, and houses.
If you’re still unpacking, use boxes as temporary hiding spots—they’ll love it!
Individualized Care
If you know your cats’ personalities, provide extra support to the shyer ones. Consider herbal calming remedies to ease their anxiety.
Introducing Outdoor Spaces Gradually
If your new home includes a garden or outdoor space, take it slow:
Start Indoors:
Keep your cats inside for 2–4 weeks until they feel secure in their new environment.
Prepare the Garden:
Create a safe outdoor area with enclosed fencing or a catio. Spray pheromones and ensure there are familiar elements like beds or toys.
Gradual Exploration:
Once they’re comfortable indoors, allow supervised access to the garden, one cat at a time.
What Worked for Us
Despite the chaos of moving, here’s what we managed to achieve with our resources and limitations:
Spraying pheromones and catnip throughout the house to create a calming environment.
Using unpacked boxes as temporary hiding spots and play areas.
Gradually introducing the cats to their new home, allowing them to explore at their own pace.
Our home and garden are still a work in progress. The house needs more climbing structures, cozy cat houses, and other adjustments, while the garden is currently in its third phase of becoming a safe, cat-friendly space. These adaptations are being implemented gradually, within our financial and time constraints, and we’re learning and improving as we go.

Lessons Learned: Creating a Cat-Friendly Home
After settling in, I made some quick and budget-friendly updates to better accommodate our cats:
Safe Outdoor Access: Installed a secure pathway between the house and the garden.
Improved Interior Design: Adapted materials and layouts to suit both cats and humans.
Additional Tips for Multi-Cat Households
After settling in, I made some quick and budget-friendly updates to better accommodate our cats:
Litter Boxes: Provide one box per cat plus an extra to avoid territorial disputes.
Materials: Use durable, easy-to-clean materials for furniture and floors in areas frequented by cats.
Toys and Enrichment: Keep plenty of scratching posts, toys, and climbing structures available.
Final Thoughts
Moving with cats isn’t easy, but with the right preparation, it can be a smooth transition. For us, our cats became a source of calm during the chaos of moving. Now, our home and garden are perfectly adapted for their needs, and they’ve become more comfortable than ever.
